How to Calculate the Ocean Tides?

Determine the exact times of high and low tides in your given area. This is often best accomplished by using tides tables published by your local government. You can purchase tides tables at marine retailers or obtain them online for free.

Determine the difference between the height of low and high tide. If low tide is 3 feet and high tide is 9 feet, the tides will rise a total of 6 feet from their lowest to highest.

Divide the height differential by the amount of time between the tides. If the difference in time between low and high tide is 12 hours and the tide height differential is 6 feet, the tides rise by half a foot per hour. Multiply this number by the amount of time that has elapsed since low or high tide to find the current height of the tide.

This method of tide height calculation seems very oversimplified. It assumes that the tide rises and falls in a linear fashion, at regular intervals. In actuality, the tide rises and and falls along a cosine curve. Do you have a reference to a more accurate formula for predicting tide heights?
