Instructions

  1. Formal

    • 1

Cover the table with a neutral tablecloth in white or beige. Center it. Choose lace, linen or damask to coordinate with your best china and silver.

    • 2

Fold matching linen napkins into thirds and place them under the fork to the left of the plate, or pull them through sterling silver napkin rings and lay them in the center of the dinner plate.

    • 3

Layer a plain linen tablecloth under one of vintage lace. Place a lace runner on top of a damask cloth.

    • 4

Arrange a crisply ironed linen place mat under each dinner plate. Place the silverware on top if the placemat is large enough. If not, place only the dinner plate on it and put the silverware on the table's surface. Finish the table with a matching linen runner.

    Informal

    • 5

Lay a tablecloth in a colorful floral print, solid or check on the table. Center it. Layer a contrasting runner over it. Choose solid colors if your dishes are patterned and prints if the dishes are plain.

    • 6

Mix and match napkins to complement the tablecloth. Fold them into thirds and place each napkin under the fork or pile them casually in a basket for each diner to help themselves. Run each napkin through a casual napkin ring, such as those made of bamboo or colorful plastic, and put it on the dinner plate.

    • 7

Situate a place mat on the table in front of each chair or arrange them in a pile in the middle of the table so each diner can choose. Match the place mats or mix patterns and solids as long as they are in the same color family.

    • 8

Spread a table runner down the middle of the table from side to side. Center a second runner from end to end. Don't add placemats or other linens. Put the place settings on the table's bare surface for a streamlined look.

    • 9

Throw a quilt diagonally across a round table to give it a country flair. Add gingham or calico napkins in the same color palette.

Layer a solid-color tablecloth under a floral print for a cottage theme. Add napkins of the same color and print.
