The star symbolizes the one seen over Jesus' manger in Bethlehem, and is appropriate for boys' Santa Lucia costumes.

Each year on December 13, Catholics around the world -- but particularly those in Scandinavian countries -- celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season with Santa Lucia processions in the churches, through city streets and even in family households. The girl chosen to be St. Lucia is accompanied on her journey by Lucia maids and Star boys, all carrying candles to light the way. The Star boys who symbolize the journey of the Magi, dress in white as well and wear pointed hats decorated with stars.

Instructions

    • 1

Fit a man's shirt or nightshirt to the boy. Button the shirt to the collar and then pin the shoulders in using a simple basting stitch. The sleeves only need be rolled up to the boy's wrist. Any style of pants can be worn under the costume. Sometimes the Star boy costume includes a loose belt; if the costume is too loose, it's a good idea to add the belt for safety's sake.

    • 2

Roll the poster board into a cone large enough to fit the boy's head. Glue the edges and trim off any uneven part at the bottom of the hat with scissors.

    • 3

Cut out stars from the construction paper or foil in any size or number you choose, and glue them to the hat so that they are scattered over it. The stars can be as simple or as fancy as you like. If you have them, add some star stickers.

    • 4

Cut out two stars of the same size, about 2 1/5 inches wide, to be glued to the top of the dowel -- one in front and one in back. The dowel with the star will take the place of a lighted candlestick.

Tips & Warnings

  • If, after trying the shirt on it's too long, the shirt can be hemmed at the bottom with the same simple stitch so that no permanent changes are made to the shirt.
