Instructions

    • 1

Remove the source of the smell and clean the refrigerator. After finding and removing the item from which the charcoal odor is coming, wash down the inside of the refrigerator in the location where the item was located with soapy water to remove any particles from the refrigerator. If you do not know the source of the smell, wash down the entire inside of the refrigerator.

    • 2

Make a mixture of 1 part vinegar or 1 part baking soda to 1 part water to deodorize. Both vinegar and baking soda disinfect and help eliminate smells. Wash the interior of the refrigerator with the mixture.

    • 3

Place an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator. Baking soda absorbs odors in your refrigerator, from spoiled food to a charcoal smell. If you have baking soda in your refrigerator, but the box was opened more than three months ago, open a new box to replace the old baking soda.

    • 4

Get activated charcoal for the refrigerator if the baking soda does not absorb the charcoal odor in the refrigerator. Fill a pan with the charcoal and place it in the refrigerator much like you would do baking soda.

    • 5

Take the food out of the refrigerator, turn the cold temperature down to a more neutral, warmer setting and leave the active charcoal sitting alone inside the refrigerator for three to five days if the smell is still there.
