iTunes Locks Up When It is Connected to an iPod
In order to update the software on your iPod and keep your music library current with recent downloads, you will need to occasionally hook the device to a Windows or Mac-based computer. iPods use Apple's iTunes software to find system updates, sync contacts and downloads, and other important functions. If your iTunes is locking up when you connect your iPod, there are a few quick troubleshooting steps to return iTunes to functionality.

Restart everything. This means disconnecting your iPod from the computer and restarting the system. You should also restart your iPod, which can be done by sliding the hold switch from "Off" to "On" and back again, then pressing and holding the "Play" and "Menu" buttons.

Download the latest version of iTunes when your computer is finished rebooting. Newer versions resolve known software problems. You can find a link to the most recent version of iTunes as of late 2010 in the Resources section of this article.

Connect the iPod to the computer once the most recent iTunes version has been installed and see if this resolves the issue. If not, further troubleshooting steps need to be taken.

Swap the iPod USB sync cable into a different USB port. USB problems could cause the freezing issue. If it persists, try using a new cord altogether.
