How to Remove Black Paint From Tan Carpet

Save

Removing black paint from a tan carpet can be a hassle. This is because black paint is most visible on tan and lightly colored carpets. Use common household products to save money on commercial carpet cleaners. Test your cleaning method on an inconspicuous area of your carpet to make sure it won't damage your carpet's color or texture. However, clean your carpets as soon as possible so that the black paint doesn't have time to sink into the carpet.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid dish soap
  • Cloths
  • Ammonia
  • Towel
  • Nail polish remover containing acetone
  • Toothbrush

Removing Latex, Water-Based Paint

  • Mix ¼ tsp. liquid dish soap with 1 cup lukewarm water. Lukewarm water will help dissolve the paint better than cool water.

  • Dip a cloth into the mixture and dab it on the black paint stain. Work from the edges of the stain toward the center. Dab rather than rub the stain so that you don't spread it or work it deeper into the carpet. Use a new cloth once all of the paint has transferred to the cloth.

  • Add 1 tbsp. ammonia to 1 cup water if the black paint stain is still visible.

  • Dip a cloth into the ammonia solution.

  • Blot the ammonia solution on the paint stain until you remove it.

  • Press a towel into the area to soak up any remaining cleaning solution.

  • Mist the area with lukewarm water and press a towel into it to rinse out the solution.

Removing Oil-Based Paint

  • Apply nail polish remover containing acetone to a clean cloth.

  • Dab the oil-based paint stain with the acetone. Work from the outside of the stain toward the center and blot rather than rub it so it doesn't spread. Use a new cloth and apply more acetone as needed.

  • Add ¼ tsp. liquid dish soap to 1 cup lukewarm water if the stain is still visible. Dip a toothbrush into the solution.

  • Gently scrub the oil-based paint stain with the toothbrush until you've removed the rest of the paint. Reapply solution as needed.

  • Press a towel into the area to soak up the rest of the cleaning solution. Mist the area and press a towel into it to soak up the water and cleaning solution.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid getting paint on your carpets by taping drop cloths to the floor when you are undergoing large-scale painting projects.
