How to Install MAME on the PSP Slim

The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) Slim is an extremely capable device with a variety of features. Through the use of custom firmware, it can perform additional tasks, including the ability to install Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME) software. Originally designed for personal computers, MAME has made it's way to Sony's handheld and can be downloaded online. Though MAME is not licensed, it is a free application created by users for users to broaden the gamer's unique experience.

Things You'll Need

  • PSP custom firmware (version 3.60 or later)
  • Memory Stick Pro Duo
  • PSP USB cable
  • Windows PC
  • Download the program "MAME4ALL v4.9r2 Hires" to your Windows PC from TTYMan's personal website. TTYMan is the creator of the software. Unzip the file.

  • Connect your PSP Slim to your PC via the PSP USB cable.

  • Navigate to the PSP on your PC, found in "My Computer." Open the "PSP" folder, then click on the "GAME150" folder.

  • Copy the unzipped "MAME4ALL v4.9r2 Hires" file to the GAME150 folder.

  • Disconnect the PSP. Go to the PSP menu and navigate to "Game." Press the "X" button.

  • Find MAME and press the "X" button. MAME will install and be ready to use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Installing custom firmware will void a PSP's warranty and can cause it to "brick" (make the unit unresponsive). Errors can cause the system to malfunction permanently.
  • Do not disconnect the PSP from the computer until after it is finished copying all files.
