Vinegar to Remove Skunk Spray

Tomato juice, contrary to popular belief, is ineffective in removing skunk odor, according to the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension. White vinegar, when used in combination with liquid detergent, is an inexpensive solution that can neutralize the unsavory odor of skunk musk on pets, humans, clothing and your yard.

Things You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Garden sprayer
  • Mix 1 gallon of vinegar with 1 cup of soap. Make more or less depending on your needs, but preserve the ratio of vinegar to soap.

  • Saturate the affected area with the solution. If the odor is on your lawn, pour the solution into a garden sprayer and saturate your yard. When washing your clothes, pets and human skin, scrub thoroughly for five minutes to make sure the solution soaks completely into hair, skin or fabric.

  • Rinse the affected area thoroughly with cold water.
