Directions for Making Fleece Rolled Brim Hats for Children

In northern climates, it seems that children can never have enough warm winter hats. The hats get wet from being worn in the snow, they get left in school lockers and they just plain disappear during winter seasons. Savvy parents lay in a good supply of extra simple hats for their kids, like fleece rolled brim hats that pop on and off easily. Rather than spend a lot of money on extra hats, create a collection of colorful fleece caps in one short afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around your child's head right above the ears. Add 1 inch to this measurement. This new total is the width of your fabric piece.

    • 2

Cut out a piece of fleece fabric 15 inches tall and the width that you calculated from measuring your child's head.

    • 3

Lay your fabric piece on the table in front of you. Have the width measurement from your child's head running horizontally across the top and bottom edges.

    • 4

Fold the bottom edge up 1/2 inch and pin it closed. This will create a hem along the top of the hat brim. Sew this hem closed by stitching right along the fold.

    • 5

Turn the fabric around so that the hemmed edge is at the top of the rectangle. Cut the bottom edge of the fabric into a fringe. Cut up from the bottom edge 4 inches in toward the center of the fabric rectangle. Make cuts every 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Make them exactly the same distance apart, or space them randomly for a more casual look.

    • 6

Fold the right edge of the fabric over to the left edge of the fabric, which will fold the fleece in half with the hem at the top. Pin the right and left sides together. Stitch this edge, beginning where the fringe ends and ending 3 inches from the hem. Use a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Turn this tube inside out when it is sewn.

    • 7

Fold the fabric tube in half so that the seam is on the left edge. Pin together the two loose flaps of fabric above the hem that didn't get stitched together. Sew this seam using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 8

Gather together all the fringe at the top of the hat and wrap thread around the base of the fringe five or six times, knotting the thread tightly to hold it. Fold up the bottom hem up the hat 3 inches to make a rolled brim at the bottom of the hat.
