How to Disable Electronic Governor Mopeds

Newer mopeds come with an electronic speed restrictor.

Modern-day mopeds are often built with an electric speed restrictor called a capacitance discharge unit (CDI). This computer controls the rev limit of a moped, limiting the engine's maximum revolutions per minute (rpm) and, in turn, limiting both speed and acceleration on your bike. Fortunately, you can simply replace this CDI with an aftermarket one that permit unlimited revs, allowing the moped to operate at its full engine capacity.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver
• Wrench
• Aftermarket CDI

Instructions

1. Locate the battery box on your moped. If your moped doesn't have a battery, it does not have an electronic CDI.

2. Remove the electronic CDI, a metal box measuring about 6 inches long by 3 inches tall located directly above your battery using a screwdriver or wrench.

3. Replace the stock CDI with an aftermarket one by simply plugging in the new CDI into the stock CDI harness --- disguised as a cable with a large white connector piece on it.

4. Reattach the battery and battery box, and run your engine for five minutes to warm up the new aftermarket CDI.

• Taking apart your moped will void any warranty you may have on it.
