How Do I Install an Allure I Range Hood?

Mounting an Allure I range hood over the range will help prevent cooking odors and smoke particles from filling your home. The Allure I range hood can be installed with a duct to suck out cooking odors and smoke particles through a metal filter to the outside. The metal filter prevents grease from sticking to the inside of the duct work. You can also install a ductless hood, which sucks odors and smoke through a metal or charcoal filter, returning clean air back into the kitchen. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn power off to the appropriate circuit at the main panel box. Lay the range hood on its back with the filter and light panel facing up. With the square back of the range hood toward you, pull down on the metal air filter inside and lift the filter out to remove it from the unit.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver to remove the screw located in the center of the damper duct connector found to the left of the fan, then remove the damper duct connector from the unit. Remove the plastic bag from inside the damper duct that contains the mounting screws, orange wire nuts and the wire connector.

    • 3

Remove the screw located in the center of the junction box cover found to the right of the fan. Remove the round metal cutout -- the "knockout" -- inside the junction box, located in the back or top of the range hood. If the cable coming from the main panel box is located on the wall, use the knockout on the back of the range hood. If the cable is coming through the cabinet over the range, use the knockout in the top of the range hood.

    • 4

Push the 1/2-inch wire connector through the knockout hole from the outside of the range hood, then screw the nut onto the end of the connector inside the range hood to secure the connector to the range hood. The connector will be used to secure the electrical cable to the range hood junction box. (The next two steps are for ductless installation only.)

    • 5

Remove the five screws holding the the light panel. Lift the light panel and pull apart the white connector behind the light panel to disconnect the wiring harness from the light panel. Set the light panel aside.

    • 6

Remove the screw in the center of the air shoot located under the light panel and pull the baffle out of the air shoot assembly and flip it over. Reinsert the baffle to the air shoot. You will hear a click when the baffle is in place. The baffle is a panel used to direct the air flow, either to the duct work or back inside of the house. Flipping the baffle over will direct the air to the ductless slot. Carefully reinstall the air shoot cover, taking care not to pinch the wire in the cover. Connect the wire harness back to the light panel and screw the light panel back into place. (The next step is for duct installation only.)

    • 7

Remove the top or rear 3 1/4-inch by 10-inch rectangular duct knockout, to install the damper duct. If the duct work is coming from the wall, use the back knockout on the range hood. If the duct is going through the cabinet above, use the top knockout on the range hood. Measure from the end of the cabinet where the corner of the range hood will be fasten back to the closest end of the duct opening and measure from the wall to the duct opening. Transfer these measurements to the top of the range hood to determine where to attach the damper duct over the knockout on the range hood. Screw the damper duct in place with the six screws provided, and remove the tape holding the damper closed.

    • 8

Slide six inches of the cable coming from the main panel box through the wire connector, installed previously in Step 4. Tighten the screws on the connector to secure the cable into the junction box. Using a utility knife, cut the plastic coating from the connector along the cable down to the end. Peel back the plastic coating to expose the three wires inside. Cut the plastic coating off at the connector. Using wire strippers, cut 1/2 inch of the insulation off the ends of the black and white wire to expose the copper.

    • 9

Twist the white wire from the main panel and the white wire in the range hood together, insert the ends of the wires into one of the orange wire nut provided and twist the wire nut until the copper ends of the wires are secured tightly inside the wire nut. Connect the black wires in the same manner. Make a little hook on the end of the uninsulated ground wire and hook it around the green ground screw. Using a screwdriver, tighten the green screw, securing the ground wire to the metal frame of the range hood. Carefully screw the cover to the junction box back into place. Do not pinch the wire in the cover.

    • 10

Slide a stud finder along the wall to find the wall studs where you are installing the range hood. The stud finder will beep when it locates a wall studs. Make a small mark with a pencil on the wall where the stud finder beeped, about 10 inches down from the cabinet above to mark the wall studs. Align the duct damper to the ductwork and lift the range hood into place over the range. Push the wire back into the wall to remove the slack in the wire as the range hood is lifted, to ensure the wire does not get pinched. Using the marks on the walls as a reference, screw the range hood in place to the wall studs.

    • 11

Install two light bulbs into the light sockets on the light panel. Slide the air filter back into the air filter slot on the range hood and push the filter securely into place. Turn the power on to the circuit and test for proper operation.

Tips & Warnings

  • The duct damper can be adjustable up to one inch. Loosen the screws holding the duct damper to adjust the damper to line up to the ductwork. When the duct damper is in the correct place, tighten the screws.

  • Use either halogen or incandescent bulbs in the lighting panel. Halogen energy saver bulbs use less energy than incandescent bulbs.

  • The range hood must be grounded properly. Check all the wire nut connections to ensure the wire nuts are tight.
