Instructions

    • 1

Remove all pillows and cushions from the couch.

    • 2

Use your vacuum cleaner hose attachment to thoroughly vacuum the entire surface of the couch, including as far as the hose can reach inside it.

    • 3

Vacuum the entire surface of the cushions.

    • 4

Wash any washable pillows or cushions in your washing machine at the hottest temperature to kill all dust mites.

    • 5

Wipe down the surface of the couch with a cloth and very hot water. This helps remove any surface dust, skin cells and dust mites that your vacuum cleaner missed. If the cloth is very dirty, wipe down the couch again and continue doing so until the cloth comes up clean.

    • 6

Cover the pillows, or pillows inside cushions, with a dust mite cover. This cover reduces the buildup of skin cells, the dust the mites consume, and prevents dust mites from living on the couch.

    • 7

Adjust the temperature in your home to about 70 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Temperatures higher than this attract dust mites.

    • 8

Run a dehumidifier near your couch to keep the humidity level down during the humid times of the year. Dust mites thrive in warm, humid conditions.

    • 9

Open the shades. Bright sunlight kills dust mites. Place your couch near a window and make sure the sun shines on it for as long as possible each day.
