How to Make a Fish Out of a Water Bottle
Water bottle fishes are a great rainy-day craft activity for kids of all ages. This project works well with just one child or with a group of children. Although younger children need to be supervised while using paint and glue, they can accomplish all of the steps alone.
Things You'll Need
- Plastic water bottle
- Acrylic paint
- Paint brushes
- Card stock
- Scissors
- Glue
- Wiggly eyes
Instructions
-
-
1
Remove the cap and label from the plastic water bottle. Soaking the bottle in warm, soapy water will make label removal easier.
-
2
Clean your plastic water bottle and dry it thoroughly.
-
-
3
Paint your water bottle fish using the acrylic paint and paintbrushes and let the paint dry.
-
4
Cut a tail and fin from the card stock. Choose card stock colors that complement the colors on the painted water bottle.
-
5
Fold the end of the fin and the end of the tail so that there are 1/2-inch tabs to attach the fin and tail to the water bottle.
-
6
Glue the fin and tail to the painted water bottle once it is completely dry. The tail goes on the flat bottom of the water bottle.
-
7
Glue the wiggly eyes on either side of the top of the water bottle.

Tips & Warnings
For older children, you can give them pictures of actual fish. Brightly colored fish such as Parrot fish, Angelfish and Labouti Wrasses are good choices.
Younger children can paint in more abstract designs.
For children that are not capable of holding paintbrushes, you can squirt a small amount of acrylic paint inside the bottle. Then, replace the cap and allow the child to shake the bottle so that the paint coats the inside of the bottle.
