Check the cable connections between the camera and computer as part of the troubleshooting sequence.

Virtually all digital cameras and video camcorders connect to a computer for downloading pictures and recordings from the device to the PC or laptop. Whether the camera uses a USB cable or IEEE 1394 (also known as Firewire), for the physical connection to the computer, your PC or laptop also needs drivers and software to communicate with the connected device. If you cannot find the camera on your computer when you plug it into a port, troubleshoot the connection before seeking help from a repair shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Push in the plug firmly on both ends of the digital cable into the output jack on your camera and the port on your PC or laptop. Correcting a loose connection may solve the problem.

    • 2

Set the camera to the playback mode. This control is typically located on the top or side of the camera. Also verify the camera is turned on and receiving power.

    • 3

Look for the "New Hardware Detected" message to appear on your monitor, indicating the computer recognizes the connection to your camera.

    • 4

Click the camera icon on the taskbar along the bottom edge of your monitor to open the connection between the camera and computer.

    • 5

Click the "Start" button in the bottom left corner of your screen to select "Computer" if the taskbar does not display your camera icon. Double-click the camera icon from the list of options that appears in the new window.

    • 6

Reinstall the camera's software and drivers on CD using the computer's CD-ROM drive. Load the software disc in the drive and wait for it to start automatically, then click the buttons on your screen when directed to do so. Restart the computer and test the camera connection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the minimum computer system requirements for your camera model before connecting to a different computer from the one you normally use, especially an older model that may not be able to work with your camera.
