It can be difficult to always find a tennis partner, so if you want to perfect your game it is important to have a tennis backboard handy. It is easy to construct a basic tennis practice backboard using a large, hard backboard surface and metal brackets that you can attach to the fence at a tennis court. Once you've hung your backboard and measured out a net, you'll have a virtual playing partner any time you need one.
Things You'll Need
- Hard backboard surface
- Two metal brackets
- Tape measure
- Paint or permanent marker
Obtain a hard surface for use as the primary portion of the backboard. Tennis backboards can be made of several different materials. A model similar to the backboard typically located in a public park can be constructed from a simple plywood board, or a hard polyurethane foam may be used if you wish to create a more elastic collision upon impact. The size of the backboard surface can vary based upon available space and the precision with which you hit the ball. Typical sizes range from 12 feet by 8 feet for a small backboard up to 20 feet by 10 feet for a large backboard.
Attach fasteners to the upper left and upper right corners of your backboard surface. If you plan on attaching your backboard to the fence at a public tennis court, fasten brackets at the top corners of the board.
Hang the brackets over the loops of the fence, such that the backboard leans against the fence at an angle of no greater than 15 degrees. Leaning the backboard at such an angle will result in the ball being returned at a slightly upward angle.
Draw or paint a line on the backboard that corresponds to the height of a tennis net. A regulation tennis net is 3 feet tall at the center of the net.
