How to Record Audio That Is Playing on My PC
Recording audio that is playing on your PC can be useful, especially if you create electronic music on a PC and want to record it in an easy-to-transport stereo format that allows you to check recordings on different systems and types of media. While making digital transfers used to be done only by professional engineers, it is fairly simple to transfer audio from a computer with the prevalence of standalone CD recorders and stereo recording devices designed for home use.

1
Locate the audio output on the back of your PC computer. The audio output is a 1/8" jack on the back of the computer; however, some computers may use different cabling. Read the computer's owner's manual if you are unsure of the location the audio output on your computer.
-
2
Connect the 1/8" jack on the 1/8-inch to stereo RCA cable to the input on the back of your computer.
-
-
3
Plug the right or red RCA side of the RCA to 1/8" cable to the right or red input on the back of your stereo recording device, such as a standalone CD recorder, cassette deck or second computer.
-
4
Connect the left or white RCA side of the RCA to 1/8" cable to the left or white audio input on the back of your stereo recording device.
-
5
Begin recording on your stereo recording device. Start the audio material on your PC that you want to record.

6
Stop the stereo recorder once your program material is finished. Skip to another track or allow the machine to play for a few seconds if you want to record additional audio on the same media.
-
7
Finalize the recording if you are using a standalone CD recorder. Read your owner's manual if you are unsure whether your CD recorder requires finalization.

Tips & Warnings
If you purchase a standalone CD recorder to record audio directly from your PC, make sure you purchase the correct type of recordable media. Recordable media is not returnable after opened in most cases.
If you need special cabling to connect your computer and stereo recording device, an electronics supply store can help you find the right cable or make one to your specifications if necessary.
