How to Wear a Formal Top

How to Wear a Formal Top thumbnail
A formal top with a feather accent makes a classic eveningwear choice.

A formal top is any blouse, bustier or tank in a luxurious fabric such as silk or satin or one that is decorated with sequins, beads or ruffles. Today's formal tops come in all colors, styles and price ranges and while they are meant for special occasions, can be worn almost anywhere with the right accessories. Whether attending a semiformal or dressy casual social event or heading out for a night on the town, wearing a formal top will make your outfit memorable.

Instructions

    • 1

Select your formal top. Formal tops can be found in department stores, mall clothing stores or formalwear specialty stores. Choose a top that is suited for the occasion - holiday formal tops are often heavily sequined while formal tops for the summer may be lighter and feature ruffles or more subtle sparkles.

    • 2

Choose a bottom to wear with the formal top according to the formality of the event you are attending. For a black tie optional event you will want to choose a floor length or cocktail length skirt that is either black or matches your top. You can wear a cocktail length skirt or elegant pants with your formal top to semi-formal, "cocktail attire," or dressy casual events. If you are going out to a club or restaurant dinner, you can even pair your formal top with jeans.

Wear appropriate footwear. Choose heels or flats made of patent leather, silk or peau de soie for black tie optional or semi-formal events. Heeled boots or leather shoes can be worn if you are wearing a formal top with jeans. The shoes should match the formality of the rest of the outfit.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a "Denim and Diamonds" or "Jeans and Jewels" event it is appropriate to wear a formal top with jeans, glitzy jewelry and cowboy boots.
