How to Remove the Key Cylinder on a Ford

An ignition cylinder can be removed with a simple tool like a paper clip.

The key cylinder is often a feature on a car that most drivers and owners will pay little attention to. However, if there is a problem with your cylinder, you may not be able to start your car or engage your engine. If this is the case, you can remove the key cylinder on your Ford vehicle in just minutes from your driver's seat. This process can be completed with just your ignition key and a simple tool.

Things You'll Need

• Paper clip

Instructions

1. Enter your car with your ignition key and a paperclip. Insert your key into the ignition and leave it in the "Off" position.

2. Turn your car key to the "ACC" position.

3. Insert the straightened paperclip into the small slot on the cylinder, located to the left of the key slot.

4. Hold the paperclip in the slot, as far as you can push it, and turn the key back to the "Off" position.

5. Pull on the key and the paperclip to slide the ignition cylinder out of its slot. It should pull right out and you can remove the paperclip and then the key from the cylinder.
