Training clients in their homes can be a great convenience.

Personal trainers help people reach their fitness goals through providing instruction, expertise and motivation. Some personal trainers take their dedication to the profession a step further by opening a fitness business. To grow a successful fitness business, you must not only be an excellent trainer but a skillful entrepreneur. If you are trying to build up your own personal training business, there are several things you can do to ensure it thrives.

Instructions

    • 1

Target a niche, or specialization, for your personal training business. Choose an area of fitness that you're passionate or most knowledgeable about. For instance, your niche could be weight loss, athlete training, bodybuilding, senior fitness, aquatics training, youth fitness or prenatal exercise.

Get CPR training from your local fire department, Red Cross or American Heart Association. Knowing CPR is key to being a successful personal trainer. If you ever encounter a situation where a client needs emergency aid, CPR can be key to saving her life.

    • 3

Obtain certification from a respected, credible organization such as the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, National Academy of Sports Medicine or American Council on Exercise. Personal training certification will not only ensure you know how to train clients without causing them injury, but it will provide peace of mind for your current and potential customers. Certifications typically must be kept current by taking recurring exams, so your clients will know you're continually educating yourself.

    • 4

Use quality equipment. Quality does not always equal expensive. Your customers will appreciate using fitness equipment that is well-made, clean and up-to-date, and your training will be made more effective by using such equipment.

    • 5

Offer your clients incentives to do business with you year round. Give them what competing local fitness businesses don't. For example, you can have a children's play area, offer to train clients at their home or place of business, provide a free motivational forum for clients on your website or give discounts to clients that purchase several months of training at once.

    • 6

Give back to your community. Not only will doing so provide visibility and promotion for your fitness business, but it can be a good public relations booster. For instance, your business can sponsor a health fair in conjunction with a local health clinic or school, provide free monthly or weekly fitness classes to those in disadvantaged areas or provide space for CPR training classes.
