How to Tie a Net on a Fishing Float

Fishing floats are used to provide a surface reference for nets or shellfish pots. In addition to the visual surface-reference floats provide, they also keep the nets afloat for easier retrieval. Many nets have corner ropes for tying floats. In addition to the corner cords, add extra floats if needed using 5mm nylon cord. Use trilene knots to tie the floats to the fishing net.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the corner cords out from the net so you have easy reach of the full length of cord. Pick up a float and hold it so the float eye-screw is facing up.

    • 2

Thread the cord through the eye-screw in the same direction twice.

    • 3

Wrap the end of the cord around the standing end -- the end going into the eye-screw that is attached to the net -- six times.

    • 4

Push the end of the cord through the first loop on the eye-screw.

    • 5

Moisten the cord to lubricate it, then pull the end of the cord tight to lock the knot.

    • 6

Add additional floats to the net as needed, following Steps 1 through 5. Cut lengths of 5mm cord with a utility knife and melt the ends with the lighter. Tie the cord to other attachment points where you wish to attach floats to the net, and use the trilene knot to attach the floats to the net. Cut your length of cord according to how far down you wish the net to dip into the water: the longer the cord, the deeper the net drifts below the surface. Place the additional flat cords along the edge or center of the net.
