Homemade ice cream is simple to make even if you don't have an ice-cream maker.

No matter who you are, you probably love ice cream. Sometimes it's fun to make ice cream at home, but not everyone has access to an electric ice cream maker. Fortunately you do not have to use an ice-cream maker to make your own ice cream. In fact, people have been making ice cream the old-fashioned way for quite a long time and it's a relatively simple process that just about anyone can do. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Custard-based ice cream recipe (for the best results)
  • 1 large metal mixing bowl
  • 1 small metal mixing bowl (ideally half the size of the larger one)
  • Hand-held electric mixer
  • Freezer-safe container (stainless steel or plastic)

Instructions

    • 1

Gather the ingredients together for your ice cream recipe. Prepare the mix according to the recipe instructions, mixing them in the smaller of the two mixing bowls. Place a layer of ice on the bottom of the larger metal mixing bowl. Set the smaller mixing bowl on top of the ice.

    • 2

Carefully place additional ice between the large mixing bowl and the smaller mixing bowl, until ice fills up the sides all the way to the top. Allow the mixture to chill this way for around 20 to 30 minutes. Pour the mixture into your freezer-safe container and cover.

    • 3

Place the ice cream mixture in the freezer for approximately 45 minutes. Check to see if the mixture is beginning to freeze along the edges and, if it is, remove it from the freezer and stir vigorously with a hand-held mixer or a wire whisk, breaking up the frozen sections. Place the mixture, covered, back into the freezer. Check the mixture every 30 minutes, stirring vigorously each time and placing it back into the freezer. Continue this process until the ice cream is frozen, approximately two to three hours. This ice cream is best served immediately.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make the ice cream an extra-special treat by adding pieces of candy or drizzle with melted chocolate (or chocolate syrup) or caramel over the ice cream and re-freezing for approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
