How to Tie an Elastic String

How to Tie an Elastic String thumbnail
Elastic string can be used as flexible hanging hardware for craft projects.

Elastic string is used as a flexible connection for a variety of mobile assembly applications. The rubber core and loosely woven thread cover allow elastic string to extend beyond its original length. Securely tied elastic strings allow movement between assembled parts within a limited range. A single well-formed knot can hold an elastic string in place effectively for many uses. However, knots made with elastic string require a little more effort to tighten than the average twine or cord.

Instructions

    • 1

Lace one end of the elastic string through or around the connection point. Hold the string with one hand and wrap it around with the other hand if tying the elastic string to itself. Leave 1 inch of elastic string end extending beyond the connection point.

    • 2

Tie a basic knot in the end of the elastic cord. Bend the end of the elastic string into a loop and pull the end through the loop.

    • 3

Pinch the elastic cord on either side of the knot with the thumb and index finger of each hand. Pull evenly and slowly on the elastic cord to partially tighten the knot. Reposition your fingers as close to the knot as possible and pull a second time to fully secure the knot.

    • 4

Test the connection by pulling on the elastic string or the parts it connects. Trim the end of the elastic string to within 1/2 inch beyond the knot for a cleaner look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Elastic string can wear out and snap with regular use or after long-term storage. Carefully test the elasticity of the string before each use by tugging on the connections.

  • A drop or two of super glue or rubber cement on a knot can secure an elastic line more permanently.

  • Metal fasteners can be crimped onto elastic string to make connections without tying.

  • Elastic string can snap and hit someone in a delicate area like the eye. Protective goggles can prevent most eye injuries where elastic string is being used in high-tension and high-stress applications.
