How to Change the Tire Size From 195 to 205 on a Volvo S60

Increasing your tire width offers better grip.

Swedish car manufacturer Volvo first launched the S60 in 2000 and has since made it a regular part of the executive lineup, set to be relaunched in America in 2011. Although Volvo has a great reputation for safety and reliability, there are some advantages to increasing your tire size. Upsizing from 195 to 205 tires means increasing their width by 10mm, offering a larger contact area and thus improving grip, steering and braking. Completing this change is not complicated but will require new rims to fit the larger tires.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Fitting the 205 Tires to the New Rims

    • 1

Place the new rim on a flat surface and put the 205 tires on top of it.

    • 2

Lubricate the tire wall and the rim with liquid soap.

    • 3

Force the tire onto the rim using the pry bar. To protect the new rim place an old towel between the rim and the tire so the pry bar does not come into contact with the rim at any point during assembly.

    • 4

Lubricate the other tire wall and repeat the process so the whole tire is on the rim.

    • 5

Repeat the process for the other wheels.

    Removing the Old Wheels

    • 6

Unscrew the wheel nuts so they are loose but are not taken off completely. This will make removal a lot easier later on.

    • 7

Jack up the car at the appropriate point on the chassis. These are located just behind the front wheels or just in front of the rear wheels.

    • 8

Completely remove the wheel nuts and take off the old tire and rim.

    Fitting the New Wheels

    • 9

Place the new wheel with the 205 width tires on them onto the car and tighten the wheel nuts so they are finger tight.

    • 10

Tighten the nuts as much as possible with the socket set.

    • 11

Remove the car jack and repeat this process for the other wheels.
