How to Make Spaghetti Straps

How to Make Spaghetti Straps thumbnail
Make perfect, smooth spaghetti straps for a formal garment.

Formal dresses, summer frocks and nightgowns are all styles that can benefit from self-fabric spaghetti straps. These thin straps are used instead of sleeves to hold the garment up on the body. While sewing a spaghetti strap is a simple procedure for even the most novice sewer, turning the strap right side out may seem to be an impossible proposition. Use a tailor's trick for turning fabric tubes and your spaghetti straps will be inside out in a matter of moments.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out fabric according to your garment pattern's directions. If you are creating your own pattern, measure from the front of your shoulder up and over to your back. Begin and end the measurement where your garment will stop. Add 1 inch to this measurement. This will be the length of your fabric strip. Make a 1-inch fabric strip in this length.

    • 2

Fold the strip of fabric lengthwise with the right sides, or more colorful sides, together. Pin the long edges of the fabric together to hold them in place.

    • 3

Sew along the long edge of the folded fabric strip. Back stitch at the beginning and end of the seam to make sure the seam doesn't come loose from pulling. You have now created a slim fabric tube.

    • 4

Open a small safety pin. Push the pin point through one layer of fabric at one end of the fabric tube. Close the safety pin.

    • 5

Push the head of the safety pin into the interior of the tube. Keep pushing the pin through the tube, turning the fabric behind it inside out. As the pin travels through the tube it will pull the fabric end with it, turning it right side out. Push the pin out the opposite end of the fabric tube and finish turning the tube right side out by smoothing the fabric down with your hand. Open the safety pin and remove it from the tube.
