How to Sell a Vehicle in Maryland

If you have a vehicle that you do not want to keep in Maryland, you do not have to trade your vehicle in on another vehicle. Instead, you can actually sell your vehicle on your own. When you sell a vehicle by yourself, you have to price it, answer questions from potential buyers, show the vehicle to potential buyers and transfer the ownership of the vehicle. Once you actually make the sale, Maryland has some state-specific requirements that you must meet.

Check the value of your vehicle on the Kelley Blue Book or NADA Guides website. Enter in your zip code to get an accurate value amount for your area of Maryland. Use the value amount as a guide to price your vehicle for sale.

List the vehicle for sale in your local Maryland newspaper and online on sites such as Auto Trader, Cars.com and Craigslist. Usually you can include photos in the ad. Potential buyers will contact you based on the ad. Some of the interested buyers will want to actually see and test drive the vehicle.

Download the bill of sale form from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration website. You are required to use a bill of sale if you are selling the vehicle for less than it's worth and the vehicle is no older the seven years. Otherwise, you are not required to complete the form.

Sign the car title over to the new owner under the "Assignment of Ownership" section on the back of your Maryland vehicle title. Also fill in the odometer reading and the sales price. If you are completing a bill of sale, it must be done in the presence of a notary.

Take off the license plates and return them to your local Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration office. You must get a receipt for turning in the plates before you can cancel your automobile insurance. As of December 2010, fines start at $150 per day for canceling insurance before the plates have been returned.
