How to Deflate a Waterbed

Deflating a waterbed properly is essential if you want to use the mattress in another location or if you intend to store the mattress for later use. The waterbed must be fully drained, since any water left in the mattress could cause contamination. If you do not have or do not want to invest in an electric pump to drain your waterbed, you can use a garden hose. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Strip the bed and unplug and remove the heating unit.

    • 2

Pull the plug out of the mattress and open the lid.

    • 3

Attach one end of a garden hose to the mattress plug, and the other end to a faucet.

    • 4

Turn the water on for a few seconds, until the hose fills up. Have someone watch the mattress and let you know when to turn the water off.

    • 5

Turn the water off, and unscrew the hose from the faucet. Cover the end with your thumb to prevent the water from spraying everywhere.

    • 6

Place the end of the hose into the bathtub or out a window. The hose must be positioned lower than the bed itself in order for gravity to force the water out.

    • 7

Allow the water to fully drain out of the bed before removing the hose. Lift the mattress up, pushing the water toward the plug, if drainage begins to slow or stops altogether.
