How to Fold the Sleeves of the Battle Dress Uniform

Camouflage uniforms date back to World War II for Marine Corps and Army troops. They were not widely used, however, until the late 1970s. Battle Dress Uniforms, known as "BDUs," are a Class C uniform issued by the military, meaning they are authorized duty uniforms issued for training, field operations, combat and utility. Therefore, they shouldn't be worn for all-purpose reasons. When wearing BDUs, soldiers must follow proper protocol when folding the uniform's sleeves.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your BDU top on a hard, flat surface. Lay the sleeve flat, and unbutton it.

    • 2

Slide your arm into the wrist opening of the sleeve and go up until you reach the midpoint. Use two fingers to grasp the fabric inside the sleeve; use your other hand to pull the material up until it reaches the shoulder of the uniform. It will be inside out.

    • 3

Flatten the sleeve out again, and roll it once more until the sleeve is one-half of its length. Roll the sleeve in half again. At this point, it will be folded three times.

    • 4

Flatten the sleeve; use an iron if necessary. Firmly press down on the fabric, and smooth out the material while flattening the sleeve.

    • 5

Fold the cuff over the sleeve until only the cuff is visible; only the cuff of the sleeve should be seen.

Tips & Warnings

  • During certain times of the year, it is out-of-regulation to wear the BDU sleeves folded. Check with your commanding officer if you are uncertain about folding them.
