How to Make a Carnation Flower With Crepe Paper
Crepe-paper carnations are a fun and easy craft to make with just a few pieces of crepe paper and some pipe cleaners. You can create many different color combinations and styles of carnations and even build a bouquet of paper flowers. They will be more durable than the typical paper flowers made from tissue paper, as crepe paper is thicker and sturdier.
Things You'll Need
- Colored crepe paper
- Pipe cleaners
- Jar or circular object
- Scissors
- Markers (optional)
- Paper clips (optional)

1
Stack two pieces of crepe paper of contrasting colors on top of each other for a contrasting pattern, or two pieces of the same color for a solid-colored flower. Fold the paper in half twice so that you have a small square. You should have a square with eight layers of crepe paper.

2
Place the jar or other circle-shaped object on the crepe-paper square and trace around it. Cut the circle out with scissors.

3
Poke the end of a pipe cleaner through the center of the circle once, then fold it over and bring it back down through the paper about 1/8 inch away from the first hole; the pipe cleaner should be in a "U" shape. Keep the ends even and twist them together to form the stem.

4
Hold the stem of the flower with one hand. Using your other hand, crinkle the first layer of tissue paper on the top of the flower. Concentrate on the base of the tissue, being careful not to tear it.
-
5
Crinkle and scrunch the paper layer by layer, from the center of the flower outward.

Tips & Warnings
Cut multiple colors of crepe paper into small squares instead of folding the squares to incorporate many different colors into your flowers.
Using a marker that matches the darkest shade of crepe paper, color the edge of the entire circle on all eight layers (paper clipping the layers together makes this easier).
Do not let children handle scissors without parental supervision.
