How to Check on a Contractor's License & Insurance Coverage in Georgia
In Georgia, any construction project valued at more than $2,500 must be completed by a licensed contractor. Licensed contractors are required to carry general liability insurance in an amount stipulated by law. Before beginning construction on a project, a consumer should confirm both that the contractor has a current license and that the contractor carries sufficient insurance. For this purpose, the Georgia Secretary of State maintains a public, searchable directory of individual contractor licensees.

1
Ask the contractor for his contractor's license number. This number is often included on business cards and correspondence. No legitimate contractor will have an issue supplying his license number to you.
-
2
Navigate to the Georgia Secretary of State's website. Access the professional licensee directory. Select "General Contractor Individual" for the license type. Enter the license number in the appropriate space. Alternatively, you can search by first and last name. Click the search button. If the license number is valid, your search will return a licensee record, including the contractor's name, license type, and expiration date.

3
Ask the contractor for documentary proof of general liability insurance. Look for the contractor's name on the insurance policy.
