A pedometer counts your walking steps and converts them into distance. To calculate distance and the resulting points value, the device must know how long your stride is so it knows how far you travel with each step. You can calculate your stride by measuring the distance between steps. However, the result is more accurate if you take an average among several steps.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Two rulers
Find a clear area in your house where you can walk in a straight line for at least 10 steps. Place a ruler behind the heels of your feet at the far end of the clear space.
Walk 10 steps forward using your normal walking stride. Stop and place the second ruler on the floor behind the heel of your right foot.
Measure the distance between the two rulers using your tape measure.
Divide the distance by 10 to calculate your average stride. As an example, if you measured 18 feet, then your average stride is 18 inches per step.
