  • Drop cloths or old sheets
  • Broom
  • Dry mop

  • Angled paint brush

      Remove the furniture from the room that you will be painting. If this is not possible, cover all of the furniture with old sheets or drop cloths. Place drop cloths on the floor space to protect it from dripping paint or accidental spills.

      Sweep off the surface of the wall with the dry mop. Remove all dirt, dust, cobwebs and debris with the mop. Remove any residual cobwebs from the ceiling corners. Paint does not adhere well to the walls if dust is lingering on the wall surface.

      Remove outlets and light switches. Set them aside on a table in a safe place where the screws won't accidentally get knocked over and lost.

      Mark off the edges that you do not want painted with blue painter's masking tape. Place it in a smooth, crisp line so that the paint will not bleed through.

      Purchase Benjamin Moore Aura, a self-priming paint if you are going to paint over a dark wall with a lighter shade of gray. This will save you the step of having to purchase and paint primer on the wall. If you are painting light on light, then you can paint two coats of light Benjamin Moore Aura on the light wall.

      Paint a 2-inch swath around the edges. Woodwork and ceiling which should be taped off, according to "Good Housekeeping."

      Pour a bit of paint in a paint tray. Roll the paint roller back and forth into the paint tray. Paint the central, unpainted space on the wall by using a paint tray and a paint roller. Overlap W- or M-shaped strokes for even paint distribution. Allow the first coat of paint to dry before painting the second coat of paint.

      Rinse the paint brush, tray and roller with water until the water runs clear. Pour the tray's leftover paint back into the can. Place a paper towel over the lid and tap the lid with a hammer to close it tightly. Place the paint brushes into large zippered storage bags to keep them from drying out.

      Remove the painter's tape carefully from the walls at an angle. Remove any tape droplets with a credit card or a warm wet cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Additional paint roller sizes: Use 3/8-inch nap for semi-smooth surfaces or 5/8-inch nap for rough surfaces.
