How to Warm Children's Cold Hands

How to Warm Children's Cold Hands thumbnail
Provide children with lined mittens for added warmth.

If your family lives, plays and attends school in areas where there are cold temperatures, you have probably experienced the pain of cold hands. Once exposed to cold temperatures, your child's extremities will need warming up. Warm your child's hands safely without burning or harming their skin. Good hand warming techniques will keep hands and fingers toasty warm despite the current thermometer reading.

Instructions

    • 1

Protect children's hands from cold weather placing mittens on them before they go outside. Place disposable hand warmers in the mittens for added warmth.

    • 2

Run warm water and place your child's hands under the water until the cold aches are gone. Test the water with your own hands before placing your child's hand under the water.

    • 3

Show your child how to rub his hands on the outside of his pants for 15 to 20 seconds to build up friction. Friction warms the hands.

    • 4

Give your child a mug of warm milk or cocoa. Seat the child at a table and allow her to hold the mug in her hands. This step is not advisable for young children who may burn themselves.

    • 5

Teach the child to cross his arms over his chest and place his hands under his armpits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Warm a baby's hands at night by dressing her in pajamas that have built-in mittens.

  • If the skin on the hands appears very red or hard your child may have frostbite. If you suspect frostbite visit an emergency room.
