Plan ahead. Consider those situations where you spend time with family. Visualize all areas where you'll be most vulnerable - that is, placing the baby in the car seat, loading groceries in the car while your kids wait.
Step2
Identify the top one or two self-defense techniques you would use if your family were attacked in your home, your car, and so on. Specify roles: what they do and what you do in each situation.
Step3
Organize a family meeting on self-defense similar to family rehearsals in case of fire. Ask the children "what would you do if'" scenarios, based on your list of possible situations. Tell them when to call 911 and when to run away.
Step4
Establish "safe havens" for the children if the parent is attacked. Have them lock the car doors and honk the horn or run away to a predetermined location. Make sure the children understand that their primary goal is safety. They will only distract the parent if they try to help during an attack.
Step5
Enroll your children in a basic self-defense course or martial arts school. Many programs specialize in how children should deal with strangers who pose as family friends or who ask the child to "help find a lost puppy."
Tips & Warnings
Children should understand the game plan ahead of time. Remain calm when teaching children their role if attacked.
Make self-defense a priority along with fire drills and home safety.
Learning how to break free from a wrist hold is a valuable skill for a child.
Remember, don't risk your life except to protect another human being. Material items, however valuable, can be replaced.
Always supervise children when they practice self-defense techniques.
Practicing the martial arts is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.

Great time to check to see if your children understand what to do is dinner time. Ask your kids what they would do if they heard someone in the house that woke them up. Great tips to work with your children we think they know but planning is the best defence.
