How to remove the funk from cloth diapers

How to remove the funk from cloth diapers thumbnail
Cloth diapers need to be stripped in order to remove the funky smell.

A common problem for cloth-diaper users is the development of a strong urine smell that lingers after the diapers are washed. This funk is present even after several washings and gets stronger once the diaper is used again. Cloth diapers can build up this strong smell due to infrequent washings and large amounts of urine in the diaper if not changed often enough. Minerals in the water supply and using improper detergents or fabric softeners can also cause build up in the diaper that may lead to smell issues and repelling of urine. Once this happens, the cloth diapers must be stripped to remove all build up and residue.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your diapers if they are dirty prior to stripping them. You should always use detergent that is suitable for cloth diapers. Proper detergents are free of brighteners, perfumes and added scent. A basic free and clear detergent will do the job. Many well known brands have a free and clear version.

    • 2

Place your diapers into the washing machine on the largest load setting using the hottest water possible. Hot water will help remove buildup from the diapers.

    • 3

Add one teaspoon of dish detergent to the load.

    • 4

Wash the load using the heavy duty cycle if available for increased agitation. If no heavy duty cycle is available on your machine, the regular setting will do.

    • 5

Set your washing machine to rinse with cold water. During the rinse cycle, open your washing machine if using a top loader, or peek into a front loader with a flashlight and look for soap suds. If you see suds, repeat the cold rinse until the water is clear and free of suds.

    • 6

Dry your diapers outside in direct sunlight if possible. The sun will help whiten your diapers and remove any remaining odor from the diapers. Drying in the dryer is fine if you can't sun them, just do not use any fabric softeners that would coat the diaper and cause them to repel and stink again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with your cloth diaper manufacturer for care instructions prior to stripping your diapers. Some detergents and additives may void the warranty on your diapers. Baking soda in the wash and vinegar in the rinse may effectively strip your diapers; however some diaper manufacturers prohibit these items from being used on their diapers.
