Directions for Making a Pop-Up Christmas Card
This season when you're giving greeting cards, try giving a pop-up card to mix things up a bit. They look like regular cards from the outside but offer a guaranteed surprise popping out when they're opened. Making one can be just as fun as giving one.

1
Choose a Christmas image from a free coloring page website such as Crayola or The Kidz Page. Pick an image that is small enough to fit inside a card made with a vertically folded 8.5-by-11-inch card stock paper. A 5-by-7-inch picture is a good size. Choose a picture that can be folded symmetrically and that has a simple outline that can be cut out easily.
-
2
Color your Christmas printout using markers, colored pencils or crayons. Use colored pencils to make the colors light and soft, or use markers to make the colors dark and bold. Young children may use crayons, which are safer and easier to clean up than markers.

3
Cut the picture out around its outline.

4
Fold the picture in half vertically so that the backs of the picture are touching. Fold a new piece of 8.5-by-11-inch card stock paper in half vertically to create the shell of the card.
-
5
Cut one 8-inch-by-1/2-inch strip from a piece of card stock. Unfold your picture and turn it over to the back. Apply a small piece of tape to the center of the paper strip and stick it to the center of the back of your image.
-
6
Turn the picture over and fold it again vertically to return it to the shape it will have when the card is opened. Open the shell of the card and center the picture so that when the card is opened, the picture will pop up in the middle of the card. Attach the end of the left side of the paper strip to the card's shell, one inch to the left of the center line. Repeat the process to stick the right end of the strip down.
-
7
Decorate the inside and outside of the card to match your Christmas theme. When you're ready to close the card, fold the picture in half vertically with the printed sides touching. Press the picture toward the center line on the inside of the card so that it can close.
