How to Paint Harlequins

How to Paint Harlequins thumbnail
Paint a harlequin design.

Harlequin patterns, rows of interlocking diamonds, range from subtle to obvious. For a subtle look, paint the diamonds a color that resembles the color of your wall. For a unique, vibrant look, paint the diamonds a variety of bright colors. The most common harlequin design has every diamond painted the same color. However, you can change this design by painting every other diamond the same color or by painting every diamond a different color.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a grid of rectangles that are slightly longer than they are wide. If you prefer a longer diamond shape, make the rectangles longer. If you prefer a shorter diamond shape, make the rectangles wider. Each rectangle should be the exact same size. Use a pencil to draw these shapes.

    • 2

Measure the center of the top and bottom of one rectangle. Place a dot in the center. Measure the center of the right side of the rectangle. Place a dot here. Measure the center of the left side of the rectangle. Place a dot here. Draw a line from the dot on the top to the dot on the right. Draw a line from the dot on the right to the dot on the bottom. Draw a line from the dot on the bottom to the dot on the left, then from the left dot to the center dot. This makes a perfect diamond.

    • 3

Repeat the diamond drawing process for every rectangle.

    • 4

Paint all of the diamonds. Dip a paintbrush in paint and paint the edges of the diamond. Fill in the edges using the paint brush. Allow the paint the dry.

    • 5

      Erase any remaining pencil.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a simpler design, tape a harlequin design stencil to the wall. Paint over the stencil, allow the paint to dry and remove the stencil.
