Easy Homemade Roman God Costume

Easy Homemade Roman God Costume thumbnail
You can make an easy Roman god costume with a tunic and a few accessories.

Ancient Roman culture borrowed a lot from ancient Greek culture, largely due to the close proximity of these Mediterranean civilizations. One of the most notable borrowed elements is Roman mythology, which is almost completely identical to Greek mythology, although the names of gods and goddesses are different. Rome also borrowed from Greek fashion, with the toga being the main form of dress for free citizens. Romans sometimes wore long tunics instead. Gods from Roman and Greek mythology are depicted wearing togas with slight variations in accessories and footwear. Greek dress implemented natural accessories, while Roman dress often featured gold embellishments. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the white fabric at one hip, and then wrap it around your waist twice. The fabric should resemble a long skirt that hangs from your waist to your ankles.

    • 2

Secure the fabric in place at the hip with one or two safety pins.

    • 3

Drape the remaining length of fabric over one shoulder and pin the end into place at the same hip. One shoulder will be free, so you may want to wear a white T-shirt underneath.

    • 4

Attach a decorative gold brooch at the hip to conceal the safety pins.

    • 5

Drape the colored fabric over the opposite shoulder and secure at the hip with safety pins. This fabric should cross the white shoulder drape and be pinned on the opposite side.

    • 6

Wrap a gold belt or tie gold ribbon around your waist to define your waistline. If you prefer, you can skip this step and wear a free-flowing toga.

    • 7

Make a headband by wrapping thin gold ribbon around the crown of your head.

    • 8

Spray the fake ivy strand with gold spray paint and let it dry completely. This will create a headdress alternative to the thin gold ribbon.

    • 9

Arrange the ivy in a circle around the crown of your head and secure with hairpins.

    • 10

Accessorize your costume with gold bangles or wrist cuffs. You can also wear gold necklaces and other jewelry if you wish.

    • 11

Wear leather sandals with lots of straps, preferably sandals that cover part of the legs to resemble boots. If you don't have boot-type sandals, you can wear a low-rise sandal and wrap the legs up to the knees with gold ribbon or leather shoelaces.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're worried that a toga will come undone, you can wear a long tunic instead. A long white nightgown will work as a tunic.

  • To make an easy Roman goddess costume, start with a tunic or layered tunics, drape them with colored fabric and then follow all the steps for a god costume.
