How to Repair a Cracked Bass Drum Hoop
Bass drum hoops are an essential part of a drum kit. They secure the bass drum head to the drum shell and provide the necessary tension that keeps the drum head in tune. The hoops can become damaged, warped or cracked for a variety of reasons. A cracked bass drum hoop needs to be replaced or repaired. Repairing the hoop is much less expensive. A new hoop costs between $50 and $150. Epoxy, which works well for wood repairs, runs between $10 and $20.

1
Unscrew the bass drum hoop tension rods from the lugs. Remove the tension rods from the lugs. Pull the claw feet off of the bass drum hoop and remove the hoop from the drum shell.
-
2
Clean the damaged area with soap and warm water. This removes dirt, grime and other contaminants that interfere with the patching material. Sand or file off rough areas and jagged pieces of wood.

3
Mix the epoxy resin and hardener together. Follow the instructions on the package. Mix the necessary amount together on a piece of plywood until they are completely blended.
-
4
Apply the epoxy to the two cracked edges of the hoop with a putty knife. Align the cracked edges and push them together. Attach and tighten a C-clamp to the bass hoop. Allow the epoxy to dry for the recommended length of time.

5
Remove the clamp, and use 80 grit sandpaper to remove any epoxy that may have been forced out of the crack by the clamp.
