How to Find the Capacity of My Bread Machine

How to Find the Capacity of My Bread Machine thumbnail
Overfilling a bread machine may lead to burned bread or machine damage.

Bread machines come in a variety of sizes and capacities. If you've lost the manual, it is not difficult to determine how much a bread machine can hold. The dimensions of the bread machine hopper control the maximum amount of ingredients that can go into each batch. Although many bread machines have an interior fill line, there are usually no corresponding volume measurements. Anyone can find the capacity of a bread machine with a couple basic kitchen supplies. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Uncooked short-grain rice
  • 2-cup capacity or larger measuring cup
  • Kitchen scale

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the bread machine from the outlet. Open the lid to the baking compartment. Slide in the baking pan insert.

    • 2

Attach the stirring arm to the post in the center of the baking pan insert. Locate the fill line on the inside of the baking pan insert. Estimate that the baking insert can be filled to within 2 inches of the rim if no fill line is present.

    • 3

Pour short-grain rice into the bread machine baking pan insert until the fill line or estimated fill level is reached. Lift the rice-filled baking insert out of the bread machine.

    • 4

Scoop or pour rice from the baking insert into the 2-cup measuring cup. Level the measuring cup to exactly 2 cups by adding or subtracting rice grains. Dump the measured rice back into the original bag and keep track of how many cups are measured.

    • 5

Divide the total number of rice cups by six to determine the capacity in loaf pounds. For instance, if the total capacity was 6 cups of rice, the loaf capacity would be six divided by six for a 1 pound loaf. The most common bread machine sizes are 1 pound loaf (6-cup capacity), 1.5 pound loaf (9-cup capacity) and 2 pound loaf (12-cup capacity).

    • 6

Weigh dough before adding it to the machine. Stay below the estimated weight capacity and fill line when loading the dough into the baking insert.

Tips & Warnings

  • Lentils or split peas can be used as a substitute for the short-grain rice.
