How to Tell the Types of Electric Guitars
There are many makes and models of electric guitars. However, no matter who the manufacturer of the guitar is, an electric guitar will usually fall into one of three categories based on the body of the guitar. These categories include the solid body electric guitar, semi-hollow body electric guitar and hollow body electric guitar. Each body type lends a unique sonic quality to a guitar, making each type preferred for different genres of music.

Look at the body of the electric guitar and search for any hollowed out portions of the guitar. If the body of the guitar is a solid piece of wood, then it is a solid body electric guitar. Solid body electric guitars are known for their ability to sustain notes and resist feedback. They are often used by modern-rock artists. Popular solid body electric guitars include the Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul.

Look at the body of the electric guitar and search for a hollowed out portion. If only part of the electric guitar's body is hollow, then it is a semi-hollow body electric guitar. Semi-hollow electric guitars strike a balance between the sustain and feedback resistant qualities of a solid body guitar and the resonance of a hollow body guitar. Since the hollow-body guitar is a hybrid between these two body types, it is quite versatile for a variety of music styles. Popular semi-hollow body electric guitars include the Fender Telecaster Thinline and the Gibson ES 335 Dot.

Look at the body of the guitar and search for hollowed out portions. If the guitar feels light and has most of its body hollowed out, then it is a hollow body electric guitar. Hollow body electric guitars lend the resonant sound of an acoustic guitar to the tone of an electric guitar. Their full and round sound is favored primarily by Jazz guitarists. Popular hollow body electric guitars include the Epiphone Emperor Regent and the Gretsch Electromatic Hollow Body.
