The main parts of a sewing machine

When you first begin sewing, a sewing machine can seem a bit complicated. Winding a bobbin, inserting a bobbin and threading the machine all require a precise series of steps. To help you when you are reading instructions on how to sew, you can create labels for your sewing machine's main parts. Use a label maker for the neatest looking labels or a marker on stickers for the fastest way to create labels. Consult your sewing machine's manual for the location of each main part on your own machine.

Instructions

Create labels for all of the parts of your sewing machine with a label maker. Alternatively, create labels by handwriting the names of the parts on sticker labels with a pen.

Start at the top of the machine. Locate the bobbin pin, the thread spool and the thread take-up lever. Label each one.

    • 4

Label the pieces on the front of the machine. These include the tension control knob, the stitch width and length knobs and the reverse direction lever.

    • 5

Label the wheel on the side of the machine, which is usually referred to as the hand wheel.

    • 6

Label the parts of the sewing machine's plate. These include the presser foot, the needle plate and the feed dog.

    • 7

Open the shuttle case. Label the bobbin case and the shuttle hook.
