How to Design a Blue & Brown Toile Web Graphic
Toile is a French word meaning "cloth." A factory southwest of Paris was the first to manufacture this cotton material. The first pattern was "The Four Seasons." Most of the early toile patterns displayed the French countryside. One color, usually black, red or blue, was printed on a cream or white background using 10-inch wood blocks and later 45-inch wide copper plating. Today's toile still has the "engraved" look of the original designs but there may be more than one color applied and the background may also be colored.
