How to Make Cement Leaf Prints

The veins of the leaf show up on the print.

Use cement to make a print of a leaf. Small cement pieces work well as paperweights or items in a science lab. Large leaf prints act as decorative stepping stones in a garden. Use any type of leaf, even pine needles, to make the prints. One design could be a leaf cluster towards the top of the stone, and then a hand-drawn trunk leading down from it. This is an activity you can complete on your own, or with a child or student.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the package of cement mix and pour it into a bowl. Do not dump the mix. Dumping will cause powder to appear in the air, which you do not want to inhale. Add the water according to the cement mix packaging instructions. Stir the cement and water with the stirring stick.

    • 2

Pour the cement mix into the mold. Craft stores sell cement molds in particular shapes, or you can use a clean aluminum pie pan. Use the stirring stick to scrap off of the sides of the container. Not only does this ensure you use all of the cement, but it makes cleaning easier. Run the putty knife over the surface of the wet cement to remove any air bubbles or lumps.

    • 3

Lay the leaf flat on the cement. Gently press it down evenly with your fingertips.

    • 4

Grip the leaf by its stem and lift it straight up. Living leaves are less likely to tear than dried leaves.

    • 5

Move the cement print to a cool, dry location. Cement takes between 24 and 48 hours to dry. Be sure the cement is in a location where pets or children won't disturb it.

    • 6

Loosen the cement mold by gently pulling the sides away from the cement. Slip your fingers under one end of the cement and lift it up. Use your other hand to remove the mold the rest of the way.
