How to Use Paint to Decorate a Driveway
An attractive driveway can add to the look of your home. Paint your driveway a solid color such as gray, or paint a pattern such as brick, stone, or a mosaic design. Paint can help disguise a driveway in bad repair, or provide life to a drab-colored newer driveway. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Pressure washer
- Degreasing compound
- Clean broom
- Paint sprayer or long-handled paint rollers
- Concrete epoxy paint
- Safety glasses
- Mask
- Vinyl or rubber gloves
- Stencils
- Duct tape
- Plastic sheeting
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure the dimensions of your driveway to determine the amount of supplies needed.
-
2
Pressure wash the concrete using a degreaser. Allow the driveway to dry, then pressure wash again using clean water. Drying time could be up to six hours or more.
-
-
3
Use a clean broom to sweep away any debris that may have fallen while the concrete was drying.
-
4
Stretch plastic sheeting over areas alongside the driveway you do not want painted. Tape plastic down if a sprayer will be used.
-
5
Arrange stencils in the pattern you prefer. Make sure stencils are flat against the concrete to prevent bleeding of paint under the stencil. Use stencils with adhesive backing, or tape them down if necessary.
-
6
Spray your driveway with paint starting with an upper corner and working backwards down the drive. Hold the sprayer approximately two feet from the surface. If you are using a thin epoxy or stain, you may want to repeat this step. Don't worry about getting perfectly even color, as varying color over the driveway can add depth to the design.

Tips & Warnings
Be sure your driveway is degreased before applying paint. Grease can cause paint to peel or bubble.
Several thin coats of paint will adhere to the concrete and create a more lasting finish than one thick coat.
Wear gloves, safety glasses, and a mask.
