How to Disarm an Alarm on a 1995 GMC Van

Anti-theft systems sound alarms if an intruder attempts to open the door or break into a car. In general, car alarms protect you from theft. But you might want to disable your alarm to avoid false alarms -- sometimes the alarm goes off when you try to open your own car. This might also prevent you from starting your vehicle. Disarm the alarm to fix the issue. Disarming the alarm in a 1995 GMC van requires no specialized mechanical knowledge and can be completed by any driver.

Instructions

    • 1

Get into your van, and insert your key into the ignition. Turn the key forward as far as it can go without turning on your vehicle.

    • 2

Push and hold the "Valet/Override" button under the dash. Hold this button until your LED, the blinking light, on your dash is solid. Your "Valet" button might also be labeled "On/Off". If this is the case, switch the button to "Off". Your alarm should now be reset. To enable the alarm again, repeat these steps.

    • 3

Disconnect your battery if you wish to temporarily turn off your alarm. Disconnect the wire connected to the main power to permanently disarm your alarm. In this situation, you would have to trace the wires. If you are not familiar with the wires in your vehicle, refer to a wiring chart for a 1995 GMC van, or take your vehicle to an installer. Removing the wires requires you to reverse all wires until they have been safely removed.

    • 4

Disconnect your horn siren. Your final option requires you to disable your horn to prevent any siren from sounding. This will disable the horn, which could make driving dangerous. Locate the horn siren wire. Disconnect the wire to disable the horn.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tampering with wires could cause malfunctions and should be done at your own risk.
