Goldenrod is a natural source of yellow dye.

Nature provides an abundant supply of everything you need to make homemade fabric dye. Plants purchased at a farmer's market or picked from your own garden, when mixed with water and heated, can be used to create varying shades of color to dye fabric.

Things You'll Need

  • Goldenrod, daffodil flowers, dandelion flowers or onion skins
  • Large pot
  • Water
  • Wooden spoon
  • Rice strainer or sieve
  • Large bowl

Instructions

    • 1

      Chop petals or onion skins coarsely and measure. Place chopped pieces into a large pot.

    • 2

      Add water; two parts water to one part chopped flowers or onion skins. Heat to boiling and allow to simmer until water reaches the desired color.

    • 3

      Strain solids from the liquid, reserving liquid in a bowl. Fabric to be dyed can be placed directly into this bowl.
