How to Make Terra-Cotta Objects
Terra cotta is a versatile type of pottery found mostly in the form of clay pots. Using leftover or broken terra-cotta pots is a great way to make other objects for the home or garden. Terra cotta is versatile and sturdy, and it doesn't loose its color in the garden over time. Making interesting garden sculptures, bird baths and birdhouse creations are all good uses for terra cotta.

1
Construct a terra-cotta birdbath by turning a large terra-cotta pot upside down and placing the matching water pan on top. Keep the water pan from falling over by placing a large rock in the center of the pan. This also makes a great place for birds to rest when using the bird bath. Decorate your bird bath with acrylic paint covered by clear, acrylic sealer spray or polyurethane.

2
Create terra-cotta people or animal sculptures for your garden. Collect a variety of sizes for your people or animals. Use larger pots for heads, trunks and legs, and use smaller pots for arms, tails and noses. Connect pots together using medium-size ropes. Once the pots are connected, bend and move arms and legs into interesting positions. These can also be used like topiaries by planting climbing vines or cascading plants into a few of the pots.

Make a terra-cotta birdhouse by drilling an opening large enough for a wren or other small bird. Turn the pot upside down and use an 8-inch eye-bolt inserted through the drainage hole to create a hanger. Attach the eye bolt to a round piece of plywood to create a base for the house. Secure with a washer and eye-bolt nut.
