How to Clear Land for Landscaping

Before landscaping a property, the land must be cleared. Depending on the size of the property, this can be accomplished with hand tools such as saws, axes, shovels, and wheelbarrows or with large tools such as chain saws, tractors and bush hogs. The tools necessary to clear land will be entirely dependent on the size of the area and what must be cleared. Underbrush is simple to clear, but large trees require motorized equipment. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Select the right tools. The appropriate tools will depend on what is to be cleared from the land. Determine which are the right tools by identifying what is being cleared. For instance, taking down mature trees will require a chain saw, stump remover and stump grinder. Bushes can be cleared with saws and axes.

    • 2

Clear the land. Using the appropriate equipment, take down any trees, brush, plants and vines. Stack all debris in a pile away from the cleared site. Start at the farthest corner of the area being cleared and gradually work your way to the front of the property. This will allow you to be thorough.

    • 3

Remove the underbrush. For small brush, use saws and axes. For large brush, attach a bush hog to a tractor and mow the property completely.

    • 4

Rake or plow the land to even the soil. Use a dirt rake or grate attached to the rear of a tractor to even the earth in the cleared area.

    • 5

Burn or haul away the cleared debris. Depending on the amount of cleared debris, you may elect to burn it after digging a trench around it and filling the trench with water or hire a hauling service to remove it.
