Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the machine before you use it for the first time. Pay special attention to the bread tray and make sure to clean it thoroughly. It's a good idea to run an empty cycle to burn off any chemicals that may be in the machine before you bake a loaf. Set the machine on a flat, dry surface and plug it in. Remove the loaf pan and fill it half full with water, then put it back into the Breadman TR444. Push down on the pan until it clicks. Close the lid and press "Start" to run through a cycle. The steam from the water will clean the machine thoroughly, then you can start baking.

Open the lid of the Breadman and remove the baking pan. Insert the kneading paddle before adding your ingredients. There's only one way for the paddle to go: the hole in the center of the paddle has a flat side that aligns to the flat part of the drive shaft.

Add the ingredients. For a basic white loaf of bread, use the ingredients listed in this article. Put the wet ingredients in first, then the dry ingredients on top. Put the salt in with the dry ingredients, so it is separate from the yeast. Add the yeast last, making a small well in top of the flour so it rests on top.

    • 4

Insert the bread pan into the machine and press straight down until the pan snaps into place. You shouldn't have to press too hard to get it to lock. Close the lid and plug in the bread machine, if it isn't already.

    • 5

Press the "Select" button repeatedly until the type of loaf you are making appears on the screen. For this example, select "White" and your preference for crust--medium, dark or light.

    • 6

Press the "Capacity/Loaf" button repeatedly to select the size of loaf. This recipe is for a 1.5-pound loaf, so select this option. Different recipes will require different choices at this step.

    • 7

Press "Start" to begin baking the loaf. If you simply press "Start" when the machine powers on, the default routine is for a 1.5-pound, basic white loaf. The Breadman TR444 goes through a few different cycles while making the loaf, beginning with kneading and a rest period.

    • 8

Use oven mitts to remove the loaf pan from the machine when the cycle finishes (after three hours and twenty minutes for a 1.5-pound white loaf). The loaf pan gets quite hot during the process, so be careful. Turn the pan over and tap it gently until the bread falls onto a cooling rack. Sometimes the kneading paddle will get stuck in the loaf. Wait until the loaf cools before removing it (20 minutes).
