To get the best sound quality from a speaker, place it in an enclosure of proper volume. Volume is the amount of space available inside the speaker cabinet in cubic inches. The enclosure is fit around the speaker such that the sides of the speaker almost touch the walls. The depth of the enclosure determines how far down from the opening the speaker rests. The recommended speaker volume enclosure varies based on the specific unit, but should be clearly written on the device or its documentation.

      Measure the width and length of the speaker in inches. Make the measurements across the top of the speaker. The measurements will be the same for a circular speaker. For this example, assume a rectangular speaker with a width of 10.0 inches and a length of 15.0 inches.

      Add half an inch to the length and the width to ensure the speaker does not touch the sides of the enclosure. This measurements are the width and length of the speaker enclosure. Now the width is 10.5 inches and the length is 15.5 inches.

      Multiply the width times the length to obtain the area of the top and bottom of the enclosure in square inches. Performing this step leads to 10.5 inches times 15.5 inches, or an area of 162.8 square inches.

      Divide the recommended speaker enclosure volume by the area to obtain the depth of the enclosure in inches. Assume a recommended volume of 3,256 cubic inches. Completing the exercise leads to 3,256 cubic inches divided by 162.8 inches which equals a depth of 20.0 inches.
